Geoecology

Geoecology is an interdisciplinary science, probably best translated as environmental sciences.

Geoecology is not a synonym for physical geography. It is not dealing solely with the abiotic aspects of ecology.

The main goal of geoecological education is to impart basic knowledge and expertise of environmental sciences as well as their practical application.

In 1978, geoecology was offered as a course of studies at the University of Bayreuth for the first time. Meanwhile, six universitits in Germany offer geoecology:

offered at
  since
  students per year
University of Bayreuth  1978 64
University of Karlsruhe (TH)  1986 25
TU Braunschweig  1989 29
University of Potsdam  1992 40
TU Bergakademie Freiberg  1996 50
University of Tübingen  2000 20

Caused by the great demand for geoecological studies with only limited capacities, all universities have introduced access restrictions for geoecology.

The "Allgemeine Hochschulreife" (matriculation) is required, whereas practical experience is not required as a prerequisite. Application materials must be acquired from each university individually. Geoecological studies have to be started in winter. Generally, the deadline for application is July 15.

  • University of Karlsruhe (TH), Studentensekretariat, 76128 Karlsruhe
  • TU Braunschweig, Immatrikulationsamt, 38106 Braunschweig
  • University of Potsdam, Studentensekretariat, Postfach 601553, 14415 Potsdam

  • University of Tübingen, Institut für Geologie und Paläontologie, Sigwartstr. 10, 72076 Tübingen

Geoeocology is an individual course of studies. Upon graduation, the title "Diplom-Geoökologe / Diplom-Geoökologin (Dipl.-Geoökol.)" is conferred on graduates. All universities offer post-graduate study possibilities (Dissertation). The studies are divided into four semesters of basic studies (Grundstudium) and another four semesters of major studies (Hauptstudium). The basic studies are completed by taking the "Vordiplomprüfung". Following the major studies, a six-month "Diplomarbeit" (master thesis) applying the acquired knowledge and methods and the final "Diplomprüfung" conclude the studies. At some universities, external internships are required during the major studies.

Basic Studies - Grundstudium

The "Grundstudium" includes basic scientific and geoecological disciplines and courses on methodology:
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • inorganic, organic and phyiscal chemistry
  • environmental chemistry
  • botany, zoology, microbiology
  • geology, mineralogy, geomorphology
  • soil sciences
  • hydrology, meteorology, climatology
  • landscape ecology
  • statistics, data processing, cartography

At all six universities, the basic studies exhibit only slight differences. The “Core Contents for Geoecological Studies“ (in German) serve as a common basis, ratified in 1999 by the Hochschulkonferenz Geoökologie including university representatives and working geoecologists.

Major Studies - Hauptstudium

The major studies differ considerably at the individual universities. This is due to specific research directions and equipments at the different universities. Therefore, students may select courses according to their own abilities and interests. After finishing the basic studies, the major studies may be continued at any of the six universities. However, due to the limitied capacities of each university, this is only possible if capacities are available. Here you may find more information about the specific universities (in German only):

Employment

Geoecologists are "specializing in interdisciplinarity". They work in the industry, for municipal, regional or federal authorities, in universities and research institutes, in foreign aid programs, and as freelance consultants or engineers. Broad education combined with high-quality specialized training allows geoecologists to work in fields such as environmental analytics, waste disposal, contaminated sites treatment as well as agriculture and forestry, etc. It is important to note, however, that the field of employment changes continously. In this regard, the Association for Geoecology in Germany offers various conventions, conferences and exhibitions
